Striving to be an appealing and welcoming destination for new immigrants, the Carlton Trail Regional Economic Development Authority (CTREDA) Immigrant Settlement Services Program provides immigrant settlement services to immigrants and their families, employers, and communities in the CTREDA service area.
Settlement Services provides support, assistance and referrals to immigrants as they adapt to daily life in their new home and refers to the process that newcomers go through in adapting to life in a new place, such as orientation to their community, ESL, enrolling children in school, getting a social insurance number, job search and career planning, finding a family doctor, and generally learning how to be comfortable in a new society. CTREDA’s Immigrant Settlement Services program offers a full range of services for newcomers, employers and the community.
What we provide newcomers: - Referral to English as a Second Language Classes
- Information and orientation to life in Canada including winter driving, weather and home services
- Help finding affordable housing
- Information about health care, education, banking, the law, transportation, shopping, drivers licenses, insurance
- Access to community services such as doctors, dentists, lawyers, childcare, and social services
- Employment services, education, job search
- Help filling out forms for a health card, Child Tax Benefit, travel documents, citizenship, permanent resident card, banking, finances and budgeting
- Registering children for school and further education resources and counseling
- Cultural interpretation and translation
- Information on local resources and facilities
- Advocacy to support individual needs
- Support, information, and assistance concerning immigration issues
- Family sponsorship information
- Matching newcomers with volunteers for friendship and support
- Information regarding rights, entitlements, and responsibilities
- Liaison and resource for the community regarding issues that concern immigrants
- Other services that help facilitate the short and long-term settlement process
What we offer employers: - Provide support and guidance to employers who intend to hire immigrants or who are currently working with immigrants
- Assist employers in developing best practices on successfully integrating workers into the workplace
- Assist employers in developing workplace awareness programs for local employees along with cultural sensitivity and diversity training
- Provide companies with resources on interviewing and hiring across cultures
- Complete language assessment and enroll new-comers in ESL classes
What we provide for the community: - Help educate community leaders, service delivery organizations and volunteers for successfully integrating immigrant workers and their families into the community
- Meet with community to inform, educate, provide diversity training and solicit support, resources and assistance to successfully welcome new immigrants to the community
- Recruit, train and coordinate volunteers and host families
- Provide guidance to local businesses, banks, utility companies, health care and childcare providers
Assist the community partners in planning welcoming activities, tours of the community and available services, recreation and attractions - Provide ongoing diversity and cultural awareness training programs for volunteers and the community
Become a Volunteer Volunteers find that the many benefits of assisting with this program include a greater understanding of other people, cultures and the field of immigrant settlement as well as a sense of personal fulfillment.
